Beauty or Bacteria

How to Keep Your Beauty Addiction Safe

An act in the name of beauty like your daily skincare routine or something as innocent as trying samples at a department store can lead to unexpected results.  And they are not the ones you might have seen in those before and after photos!

Microbes can grow quickly almost anywhere, and they do!  These nasty organisms not only can change the look and smell of product but worse, it can turn your once efficacious cream to a very dangerous one as well.

According to Chemist Corner  “The microbes that can infect your formulas primarily include bacteria, mold, and yeast. In small quantities they don’t represent much of a problem but when they multiply, lookout. Bacteria like Pseudomonas can cause all kinds of health problems including skin and eye infections, toxic shock, strep throat, and even food poisoning. Yeast like Candida albicans can cause thrush. And many other bacteria can cause your products to smell awful, change color or otherwise break down.”

And it isn’t just skincare but all beauty products as well.  Rowen University conducted a two – year testing of makeup samples from 20 makeup companies in a double-blind study. They took samples at different times and discovered that between 67 and 100 percent of the products showed at least some level of contamination.”

6 Simple Steps to Skincare Safety

  1. Like mama always said, “Wash your hands, young lady”!  I know that should go without saying but never apply product of any kind with less than sanitized hands.
  2. Whenever possible opt for skincare products in air pumps or tubes.  And if you absolutely must have a jar, be sure to use the little spatulas that come inside the box.
  3. Bathrooms are full of moisture so be sure to seal your products tightly away from the shower.
  4. Never store your products in direct light, and cool drawers are usually best.
  5. Check your expiration dates, never use product past its date.
  6. When shopping your favorite stores, always use a disposable applicator.  For products in jars, ask the sales clerk for a sample sachet.
